I restarted my computer, then tried to launch PT from the shortcut:
"C:\lotus\notes\framework\rcp\rcplauncher.exe -config spreadsheet"
soffice.exe process starts
notes2w.exe process starts
nlnotes.exe process starts
soffice.exe process dies
for several minutes, it appeared the N8 client hung, as I never even got asked to authenticate and the program was not responding, but eventually the client prompted me to authenticate. I entered my credentials and got into N8. N8 started without any tabs (didn't launch my mail, Home Page, Getting Started, or any of my other startup apps). Just the blue IBM screen with the Open button and the multi-tab viewer icon.
It is checking for new mail and the status bar is updating as mail is received. The Window Menu contains:

Window
Help
File -> Recent Files is showing the odt files I recently tried to open, but not the sxw (they never opened). Context in the menus is all related to documents, not Notes apps.
Tried opening a document from "Recent Documents"
1. soffice.exe task started
2. Document opened in N8 client (kind of the N8 client - no evidence of Notes stuff in there).
Was able to open other documents, manipulate them, save them, etc. Just can't get any Notes stuff.
With the productivity apps running, I clicked on my taskbar icon for notes, and it started immediately in a separate window. Kind of. I say kind of because it is Notes with the N8 Home page, but with a pre-8 bookmark bar and tabs, and it won't open any apps - either by bookmark or a File -> Open process (although this does browse the servers and files properly).
See attached images for examples.
